OPTUS BEEF !

My Chance now...

Every month, I'll be in here unleashing a torrent of anger upon some Optus dogma. Any other info I think you might need to know, I'll put in here too.

SEPTEMBER:

Well it’s the second month of Optus Beef and we’re going along nicely. Thanks to all those who sent in there mails to us, you’re support is why we’re here!

RESOURCE PLANNING

Can anyone tell me, was there ever a need for this department and the people working in it?

I can understand the need for one or two people to be handling issues relating to staffing levels and what is coming and going, but with the way things are now, why the hell are even those two here?

I do not think there is one person left within Optus who likes the way the shifts are now. It was understood by all of us that we would be doing shift work, and that was one of the parts of the job.

But is it really necessary to have people working more than 50% of their weekends and a huge number of their nights in this place?

We do like to have lives too, and the stress this sort of employment is taking on the staff is completely ignored. Relationships suffer, people find themselves increasingly isolated from their lives because all they do is work, sleep or have time off with no one else as their friends/spouses/partners are working.

Resource planning don’t even get the rosters out on time. Struggling to organise any time we can with people we want to see, the stress is compounded when we don’t know what we’ll be working the following week.

Yes we know that the agreement is signed by us saying that the least number of days required for notification is 7 days. But if Optus was serious about treating their staff properly, they would realise how hard it is trying to have a life when you don’t know what you’ll be doing in seven days.

So what do resource Planning do? Stuff around doing god knows what and ensuring that none of us know what is going on in our lives. It’s nice and easy for those of us who get to work 9-5 weekdays, but try it our way sometime.

One week of putting up with what happens to us, I’m sure they’d be working like they are mean to be.
